Publisher's summary

Frank and Philby meet at university. Frank is the king of cool and dysfunctionally libidinous. Philby is nervous, nerdy and dysfunctionally insecure. Somehow, they form a team, and go about chasing girls, passing their degrees and surviving many a green drink experience. The hilarious misadventures of Frank and Philby are just part of what lies between the covers of Headgames. There's also a difficult unicorn, a shampoo fetish, a cyber romance, a shopping mall that goes on forever, a fishing trip with Keanu Reeves and much, much more.

Editorial reviews

Headgames details the mishaps of two lads in Brisbane looking for love and liquor, but that's certainly not all. Eighteen offbeat stories make up this sometimes surreal audiobook. Watch out for appearances from the grumpy unicorn and Keanu Reeves. Australian actor Francis Greenslade climbs right into these boys' heads. He handles the "bro" tone of the main storyline easily enough. For the more bizarre tales, though, he adapts a slower, eerie sound. With Greenslade at the helm of this audiobook, it is a wild ride.

"My first giggle occurred on page three ... and I didn't stop giggling, laughing or thinking during the rest of Earls' delightful new work." (The Sunday Herald Sun)

Not so keen on anthology

I liked quite a bit of this book, so 2 stars is perhaps a bit harsh. If it had been a novel about Philby & Frank, the "Crème de menthe" boys, I would have been very happy. However, the short account of their lives was interspersed with surreal digressions into various other "head games". These diversions were on the whole interesting, but I found them a bit depressing - which was not really what I signed up for.
The narration by Francis Greenslade (who is almost every Australian TV production) was excellent, and I am still prepared to give Nick Earls another go, but next time I will look for a novel.
