About this listen

Wanna break up? There's an app for that.

Dexter meets Girlfriend's Guide to Divorce in this snarky black comedy that follows Eris as she toys with people's lives.

When 25-year-old Eris gets fired from her minimum-wage job, she stumbles on her friend's startup which outsources bad news to people. But will she manage to keep her friendships intact when she finds out she's very good at delivering breakups, when demand is really picking up, and when the recipients don't take to the news too kindly?

Inspired by the Greek Goddess of discord Eris and by today's app services obsession.

Do you want to meet Eris? Do you want to see the waterworks? Then listen to this black comedy that will make your heart break.

Crazy but true, I could see this become a reality

What happens when you put a girl who thrives on chaos in charge of splitting people up? Your success goes sky high. Eris, inspired very clearly by the goddess of discord, is hell on wheels, and after getting fired (taking her friend down with her) wanders about aimlessly until she takes a gig in which she is hired to break up unwitting partners so that their soon to be ex doesn't have to get their hands dirty. She proves to be a total success, and I could see a company actually making money doing this. I even appreciated the mention of the Golden Apple.

Vogel is energetic in her reading, and george is spot on in his writing.

A little over the top

The main character is a little over the top which makes this both hard to believe and enjoy. I received this for free for an honest review.

BOOK REVIEW......
This was a very funny story. Loved the main character. I'm looking forward to the rest of the story.

NARRATOR REVIEW.......
I have to say at first I didn't like the narrator but by about half way through I couldn't image anyone else doing it.

I received a free copy of this book from the author/narrator in exchange for an honest review

An Entertaining Idea Albeit a Little Mean

Heartbreaker Episode 1 was a good listen. It was short which I thought was good for the story. It was kinda funny but at the same time mean but with all the apps. unfortunately that's the world in which we live. The story was a clever idea and considering the length, it played like a sit com perhaps.

Kathy Vogel's narration was really good. She sounded like a natural and had great voice inflections. I think if it had gone too much longer though it might have gotten on my nerves due to its or her high octane!

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

This God Complex world has me confused

This book was written in 2016, and I would have assumed we would have more episodes by now. Especially because the decision to turn this piece (short story?) into an audiobook was made several months after that.

I struggled with it. A lot. I’ve listened to short audiobooks that were brilliant. I’ve slogged through 12-hour books I thought would never end. ‘Heartbreaker’ was a weird listen that was like a short slog.

The synopsis is pretty accurate, so I won’t rehash the plot. Eris gets fired, loses her best friend Harmony, and picks up extra work at her second job. She freelances at a company that specializes in ‘dumping people’ on behalf of someone else. On its face, the job sounds fascinating – although potentially dangerous. ‘There’s an app for that’ is a common phrase, but as Eris points out, this is something that really needs to be done in person.

And Eris, snarky twit that she is, is suited for the position. She executes two such assignments during the story and both were…unique?

Kathy Vogel was enthusiastic, but unfortunately she mispronounced one of the first words and that word appeared repeatedly. (For the record, since I am Canadian, I checked with a number of pronunciation websites and a professional editor. Vogel used the British pronunciation of the word, not the American/Canadian one.) The rest was fine, so I can forgive it. Her voice for Eris was perfect and she was good with all the other characters.

I think this could have been a great concept, but it was never fully realized. Truthfully, it left me a little hollow.

BUT…

If you’re a fan of the macabre and/or are big on revenge, you will love this book.

Interesting

take a girl Eris who can't hold a job a friend with a startup and you find the best pairing.
Eris is a bit on the morbid side but she finds her life job in giving bad news and enjoys it.
I wish the story was a bit longer for sure but as a teaser it's great.
the narrator was fabulous, she made you want to continue to listen to rest of the story.
I was gifted this audio book and have given this review to the best of my ability.
my final word is listen to or read this book if you are into dark comedy.

Eris, please cut the Adderall.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

I thought the most interesting thing about this story is the fact that the heroine, Eris, seem to not understand that she has a lot of high-energy. But also does not understand the need for boundaries. There are a lot of people that are like that and some people will call them emotionally stunted.

The least interesting thing about this story is the fact people keep encouraging Eris to be the way she is. Take for instance her brother. He keeps encouraging her to be so blunt and open and unfeeling when it comes to other people's emotions. So when somebody gets upset with Eris it seems it goes back to her childhood. The fact that everybody wanted her to do a grown-up job at such a young age.

Any additional comments?

I receive this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.

I did enjoy Kathy Vogel's narration. She brought Eris alive and sometimes that is very difficult to do especially when the story is only 2 hours or less long. There is a lot to cram in within that time frame and I think she pulled it off.

This story in the series is something that I do want to continue. I want to know what happens next. What happens to Eris? Will she ever get to the point where she just says stop? I don't want to hurt anybody else's feelings. Will she get to the point where she only wans to live her life and not worry about always being the person to do a job that nobody else wants to do?
