About this listen

Sophie Alaoui is dead. She doesn't know how she died or why. All she knows is that her soul went directly to Hell. The Land of the Forgotten is a miserable, frigid place designated for souls who weren't exactly evil, but neither were they good. Sophie lives a bleak existence with her dog, Buster, spending most of her time eating junk food and watching trash TV. She's a member of the Stairway to Heaven program, a support group designed for self-improvement. With her irreverent sense of humor and penchant for asking uncomfortable questions, Sophie isn't Heaven material. The one bright spot in her day is bumping into her distinguished, bookish neighbor on the elevator.

Ezra and Sophie have danced around each other for as long as they've been aware of each other's existence, but he only introduces himself when his conscience compels him to. To Sophie's shock and intrigue, she knew Ezra in her former life and he was somehow involved in her death. He wants to help her ascend to a higher plane, but her options are limited when she is kicked out of the Stairway to Heaven program. Having danced professionally in her past life, her one chance at escaping Hell is the Hellfire dance competition, Lucifer's version of Dancing with the Stars. Ezra and Sophie embark on a road trip across Hell on one condition: that they remain friends and nothing more.

Sophie agrees... except she is all-too willing to take advantage of moments of forced proximity as they encounter demons, the four horsemen of the apocalypse, and eerie ghost towns with fearsome creatures that roam at night. As their adventures bring them closer together, Ezra weaves their past into the present... but can she really entrust him with her heart?

Note: Hellfire is r a romantic comedy and existential, satirical adventure that pokes fun at concepts of the afterlife. The satirical elements will be offensive to some, but it's more explorative and ridiculous than anti-religious.
