Publisher's summary

Jan 1, 1955

Henry Wood is suffering greatly from a festive night of saying goodbye to 1954. His world is one of black and white, right and wrong, but his life is about to change and there will forever be shades of grey. An average detective, with a passion for the Brooklyn Dodgers, Henry is about to be hired by a beautiful woman, to find her father and his journal. It seems simple enough, but when a second woman appears, wanting his services, to find the same journal, he suspects he might be in over his head. He's right. They are the least of his problems. The local mafia boss, Tommy 'The Knife', wants the journal too. As long as it is missing, he is vulnerable, and the other bosses smell blood in the water. Who can Henry trust? Henry has a mysterious benefactor that he has never met, but seems to have his best interest at heart. Will Henry take the help that is offered? Does he have a choice?

A great mix of the funny & the hardboiled

I like that Henry Wood is ethical without being a wimp. I look forward to finding out about that door in the basement.

Period detective fiction with a twist

Just the right length for a rainy Sunday. Henry is a low key guy in NYC with mob problems. The basic plot is solid and well done. Characters have some depth and are well presented. Oh, but the quirky twists! No spoilers in this review, you have to experience them yourself! Enjoy!
MCG has the perfect voice tone, cadence, and variability to perform this tale in an understated but fully engaged delivery.

Yes, if you like hard boiled detectives this book almost has the feel of the classic's

Any additional comments?

A detective in Manhattan that does woodwork as a hobby and has a future closet are unique. The mystery was fun as well.

Intriguing

Keeps you guessing. Love that it's NY 1950's with likable characters. I hope to read about a couple of these friendships developing in the next book.

Interesting story with an unexpected twist

I read this book when it first came out and recently bought the audiobook because it was such a steal. I'm glad I did! Michael Gwynne did a great job bringing Henry and the gang to life and I enjoyed "reading" the story all over again.

As for the story itself, it's a lot of fun. Interesting characters, an unexpected plot twist and a real film noir feel. I highly recommend it. In fact, I recommend all of Meeks' books and I'm hoping he releases more of them on audiobook.

Well Written

This was very interesting and well written, with some nice twists . It had much more violence than I like, but was, after all, a gangster mystery.
