 Captain Roland Burford, ex-Royal Navy, seeks a change of direction after being disappointed in love. He accepts a diplomatic post as Secretary to the British Legation in Turin, the capital of Sardinia and Piedmont, and arranges his passage on a naval ship heading for the Mediterranean. Lady Penelope Derwent was recently wed to the Marquis of Hartley’s son James Derwent, who immediately took up his commission with the Royal Navy, leaving her in her father-in-law’s care. Desperate to get away, Penelope secretly arranges to spend the summer at the Italian lakes. With few resources of her own, she selects the cheapest means of travel, a merchant ship bound for Genoa. Unfortunately the Mediterranean is teeming with Barbary pirates. Roland is acquainted with James, but has not been introduced to Penelope. She is the last person he expects to encounter on this voyage, least of all in the dire circumstances in which she finds herself. He feels honour-bound to offer his support and protection, however little she may want it, and the failed love affair back home pales into insigificance when he finds himself hopelessly smitten.
