About this listen

It’s not paranoia when they really are out to get you…

I’ve been working on a potion that could change everything. Unfortunately, some people are allergic to change.

A price has been put on my head – and the sharks are coming for me. Vampires, Ogres and black witches are all gunning for me, and they want me dead, by any means necessary. The Coven Council, in their infinite wisdom, assign me my very own griffin bodyguard. And of course, the one they assign is none other than my most hated enemy, Bastion.

Bastion comes with his own baggage. A few months ago he strolled into a black witch’s curse and it’s slowly been killing him. To save myself, I’m going to have to lift the curse and work together with him – because another black witch is circling, and she has me in her sights.

I need to save my enemy.

I need to finish my potion.

And I need to hunt down the black witch before she hunts me…

Don't miss this witchy series if you like humour, heart and a strong heroine with a slow burn, enemies to lovers, fade-to-black romance.

Good story!

I really enjoyed this story. I loved the characters, the storyline was interesting with enough plot twist that made it so I didn't want to put the book down, and the narrator did a great job. I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

It’s an engaging story

Loved the story and descriptions. I also was taken by the budding relationship between Amber and Bastion.

The Best of the Other Realm Series Yet!!

Hex of the Witch follows Amber as she is trying to create one of the most important potions of the age, and at the same time, survive attacks from multiple angles. Chief amongst these is at least one black witch, possibly more, and her main hope for salvation, is her worst enemy.
In the prequel novella, Rune of the Witch, we were introduced to The Other Witch Series, in which Amber is asked by Bastion to find his daughter Charlize, who is missing. It is in this book, we learn that there is a black witch on the prowl.
Amber’s potion will allow those that have to recharge (all of the human born Other Realm Magic users), to extend their time in the Other without having to recharge. It will put them more on an equal footing with the creatures of the Other Realm who don’t have to recharge.
Amber has also requested that she have a leave of absence from her position as Cover Mother so she can focus on completing her potion. This comes with its own challenges when the person chosen is someone who is in the running for the Symposium position for the Witches as well.
Hex of the Witch is a multi-faceted story, as all of the ‘Other Realm’ series books are, and we find our main character Amber, moving through multiple simultaneous challenges. Although we have met Amber DeLea in previous Other Realm books, this series takes an in-depth look at the character, taking us into her life as a witch, a Coven Mother, a Potion and Rune Master and as one of the potentials for the next Symposium Member for the Witches.
Amber’s character has been previously very strong willed, with a sharp tongue, and seemingly quite tough walls to break down if you want to get close. But as we delve into her character in the Other Witch Series, we get to see a different side of her, one in which although she is still incredibly strong willed, and somewhat sarcastic, there is also a very soft side to her, one in which she cares deeply for all of those under her care. She has these walls up because of the loss of her love Jake, her mother’s mental illness, her father leaving when she was only six, and as a witch, because she has never been able to get a Familiar, something unheard of in the Witching World.
Despite all of this, she is one of the most powerful potion and rune masters around, and one of the first people think of when they need a witch.
Hex of the Witch takes us into the Home Counties Coven, where we get to meet Amber’s driver, protector and close family friend, Oscar. Oscar is Amber’s Mum’s partner, before she became ill with dementia. He helped raise Amber, and so they are very close. We get to meet multiple other Coven members as well.
We also get to see inside the Coven Council, introduced to all sorts of workings of the Witches, which is something we haven’t seen in the Other Realm series yet.
This is a really fantastic addition to the Other Realm series, with the exceptional character work we have come to know and love from Heather G. Harris as well as her outstanding world building that creates this amazing realm you can get completely lost in. Harris has this wonderful ability to tell a story that one minute you are tearing up at because something is so heart wrenching, and a page later, you have to put the book down, because you are laughing so hard.
There is a wicked sense of humour running right throughout this book, and an amazing connection between the two main characters that really brings the story to life.
The Other Realm series, and The Other Wolf series were brilliant, but The Other Witch series is something special again, Amber DeLea’s story is captivating, and once you start, it is impossible to put down.
Alyse Gibbs has the voice of an angel, and is easily one of the most delightful female narrators to listen to. I could happily listen to her non-stop. She has a very clear and concise voice, and does a wonderful job with creating both male and female voices, especially the voice of the main character Amber. She does a great range of voices to, so that you can clearly tell who is speaking, with distinct male and female characters.
On top of this, she not only narrates, but does a wonderful job of voice acting, adding emotion to each of her characters, bringing them to life, so we know how they are feeling as she tells the story, be it happy, sad, angry, elated, or a good dose of sarcasm from Amber.
Alyse Gibbs is brilliant and adds something special to these stories, and it is absolutely worth listening to them rather than just reading them, as she really brings Heathers characters to life with that beautiful voice of hers.

The narrator’s sound kept changing

The narrator’s tone and inflection were good but there were weird changes in sound. Not as in voices but overall sound changing from smooth narration to sounding tinny. I can’t speak to story line because the change in overall sound was very distracting. Along with unnaturally long pauses.

I’m on chapter 13 and bored to death.

There is no action. There is no spice. It’s just boring. In my opinion of course.
