About this listen

After running away from her drug kingpin boyfriend (and turning him in to the cops), pregnant Amber hides away in her friend Higgins' house. Higgins works at a convalescent facility and writes morbid short stories, but she feels safe - until both her body and Higgins start to change on her. On Halloween night, it becomes clear who is wearing a disguise and why.

Fairly capable writing and narration. I know some people are not into vocal fry, but the narration was capable and I can't complain. It always worries me a little when a story includes an author character defending writing choices, but if beyond the slight side eye it's a not unsympathetic character study that had some obvious thought put into it.

ngl I had a bit of a crush on Higgins forming. he was just so sweet and caring for the main character even with her obvious indifference towards him.

I had a hard time trying to guess where the story was going but once she opened the door in the last couple minutes everything was pretty predictable. I think the side plot with Higgins story was just kinda background noise? I might have missed some deeper literature meaning beind putting the two together besides maybe there being some implied horror after the ending.

it was an interesting short story!

Amber’s view of childhood friend Higgins adjusts as he helps her hide out from her dope dealing boyfriend. In this excellently narrated short story, we find out how quickly a man can go from Meh to Manly, if a woman is desperate. Author likes to throw in sex and the occasional F bomb. And clowns. Short. Free. Entertaining. And clowns.
