About this listen

The Los Angeles Times Festival of Books began in 1996 with a simple goal: to bring together the people who create books with the people who love to read them. The festival was an immediate success and has become the largest and most prestigious book festival in the country, attracting more than 130,000 book lovers each year.

Miles Corwin was an award-winning reporter for the Los Angeles Times and is the author of three critically acclaimed books: Homicide Special; And Still We Rise; winner of the Pen USA West Award for nonfiction; and The Killing Season, a national best seller.

Larry Harnisch is a leading Black Dahlia expert and writes the Daily Mirror blog for the Los Angeles Times. He contributed to the 1947project, a blog on L..A.'s criminal history.

Richard Rayner's previous books include Murder Book and The Associates. His most recent book, A Bright and Guilty Place: Murder, Corruption, and L.A.'s Scandalous Coming of Age, will be available in June.

David Ward is a professor of sociology at the University of Minnesota and served as a consultant for an investigation at Alcatraz's successor, the Federal Penitentiary at Marion, Ill. Ward's latest book is Alcatraz: The Gangster Years.
