Fascinating Stories

This collection of biographical essays of key women includes the usual suspects, but many that were new to me. The narrator did a wonderful job pronouncing the varied international names, referring to them as if they were known colleagues. The selection includes diverse industries so it was informative to learn about the impact of women in those disciplines.

The writing, unfortunately, appears formulaic and repetitive. It appears that the author had a fill in the blank outline for each chapter, which read subtitle, content, subtitle, content. Good storytelling doesn’t need those breaks, and it became annoying to listen to. There were many times a descriptive phrase was used, then repeated multiple times through the rest of the essay, and the concluding influence of each woman read like the chorus of a hymn with the same refrain.

If one were to judge a book by its cover, this is no exception to the rule that the cover reveals the book. A plain purple sheet with a typed title and author looks like the cover sheet of a dissertation so one must go out of their way to choose this book. Because of that, I anticipate this will go unnoticed and unread, except by the occasional die-hard feminist hoping to uncover something new. A better cover and strong editing would help this book immeasurably.

Aside from that, it is informative, and a worthy listen to round out the female perspective of history, and encourage other women that they too can be a difference maker.
