About this listen

Legacy LDS Audiobook Foundation is proud to present History of the Prophet Joseph by His Mother, with new additional faith-building content written specifically for the modern listener.

Biography of Joseph Smith as written by his mother, Lucy Mack Smith. Shortly following the death of Joseph Smith in 1844, and into 1845, Lucy Mack Smith dictated her recollections and family story to Nauvoo schoolteacher Martha Jane Coray. Coray worked with her husband to compile these books of notes and other sources into a manuscript, which was then copied. Although surrounded by a great deal of controversy when first published by Orson Pratt in 1853, it was later published by the Church under the direction of Joseph F. Smith. It has been called "one of the essential sources for Mormon origins" by Richard L. Anderson, and in the words of Leonard Arrington, it "perhaps tells more about Mormon origins than any other single source."

loved the perspective of the prophets mother. it's one of the few books from this time era written in The voice of a woman who experienced it.

good read

Performance is riddled with misprononciations including key terms such as Nauvoo, Nephites, Moroni. She also mispronounced/misread multisyllabic words like conspicuous, tyranny, conspiracy. Narrative style is choppy with poor phrasing making it difficult to follow at times.

Amazing story. Worst performance

Mispronunciation of the following names was distracting: Moroni, Nephi, Nephites, Nauvoo.

Also, the voice used for the adult Joseph was the same as the little boy Joseph…rather annoying.

The narrator’s voice was like fingernails on a chalkboard. I wish i would have previewed before i purchased and then i would have juts ordered a paper copy. The inflections were harsh and uncomfortable to listen to. I wish it could be redone with another women’s voice. That being said, it’s an incredible story and it gives so much more to the story of the Smith family, Lucy was an eloquent writer and I am happy to have learned more.

Such a good one but the narrator’s voice is so hard to listen to.

I enjoyed hearing this from the Mother of Joseph. It is a reminder of the hard trials the saints endured.

Enjoyed and learned a lot

The narrator mispronounced several words and names. I also did not the like the way she dramatized parts.

I believe this is a true accountif the Smith family. Joseph Smith Jr. is a true prophet of Jesus Christ.

loved it

the testimony Lucy provides is welcomed, beautiful, and heart wrenching at times. the only reason for not giving this account a 4 star rating was due to the reader who, IMO, was so over dramatic it was a constant distraction. I feel a calmer more sober reading would convey the message of Lucy's testimony better. There were also a number of words mispronounced

All good, except...

The pronunciations were bad, flat voice, Hard to tell which characters were talking. But history was interesting.
