Publisher's summary

Danez Smith is our president

Homie is Danez Smith's magnificent anthem about the saving grace of friendship. Rooted in the loss of one of Smith's close friends, this book comes out of the search for joy and intimacy within a nation where both can seem scarce and getting scarcer. In poems of rare power and generosity, Smith acknowledges that in a country overrun by violence, xenophobia, and disparity, and in a body defined by race, queerness, and diagnosis, it can be hard to survive, even harder to remember reasons for living. But then the phone lights up, or a shout comes up to the window, and family - blood and chosen - arrives with just the right food and some redemption.

Part friendship diary, part bright elegy, part war cry, Homie is the exuberant new book written for Danez and for Danez's friends and for you and for yours.

Critic reviews

"Danez Smith IS spoken-word art! This gender-neutral National Book Award finalist is full of funk and flavor, and is fearless in delivering personal poetic narratives.... Smith has a consistent cadence that sings to the listener. A few poems play with pace and pronunciation. Some poems are high-spirited, while others are painful and throw a punch to the gut. The narration is impactful, vibrant, in-your-face, and authentically Danez Smith." (AudioFile Magazine)

Damn!

Fearless. Honest. Perfect.
Such a damn good read. Treat yourself and listen to these gems! Each poem reminded me...each poem took me there...each poem stretched me. All I kept thinking about is which one of my homies I'm gifting this to.

Brilliant

What a fantastic book. The words of these poems are so thick. They carry such weight with so much grace. And their choreography has written in read by the author is absolutely spellbinding.

Poignant!

not only do you get the rare topic of true friendship (which I feel is typically pushed aside for the topic of romantic love), but you get a black, proud, queer poet making you feel like you've witnessed it. It all kinda feels nostalgic like the movie Crooklyn, ya know?

You feel it even if you never lived it.

Unrivaled Poems. Unrivaled Performance.

This book held my partner and me transfixed for a long roadtrip through the south. Smith is one of the best poets in the canon, on the page and behind the mic. Their poems shift deftly from emotion to emotion, making turns that always surprised me and always felt earned. The poems themselves are stunning and hearing Smith's performance is like getting a ticket to a standing room reading thru your audible subscription. if ya don't have this book, listen to it here. if ya got it, get it again!
