About this listen
Storm is born into a world of secrets - an island no one visits, names no one will say, and deaths that no one will talk about. The answers are locked in his species' troubled past, guarded by the fierce creasia cats. But when Storm's friends are threatened, he decides that he must act, pitting himself against the creasia to show that they can be resisted and outwitted. To prove his point, he must stay one step ahead of clever hunters, who have more to lose than Storm imagines.
Hunters Unlucky is an animal story for anyone who loved Richard Adams's Watership Down, Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book, and Jack London's Call of the Wild. Kids who enjoyed Erin Hunter's Warriors books will also enjoy Hunters. The animals in this story do not carry swords, walk on two legs, or drink tea. They fight. They starve. Sometimes, they eat each other.

The tales of The Silmarillion are set in an age when Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwelt in Middle-earth, and the High Elves made war upon him for the recovery of the Silmarils, the jewels containing the pure light of Valinor. Included on the recording are several shorter works. The Ainulindalë is a myth of the Creation and in the Valaquenta the nature and powers of each of the gods is described. The Akallabêth recounts the downfall of the great island kingdom of Númenor at the end of the Second Age, and Of the Rings of Power tells of the great events at the end of the Third Age.

Story
Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

It’s 2011, and Samuel Andresen-Anderson—college professor, stalled writer—has a Nix of his own: his mother, Faye. He hasn’t seen her in decades, not since she abandoned the family when he was a boy. Now she’s re-appeared, having committed an absurd crime that electrifies the nightly news, beguiles the internet, and inflames a politically divided country. The media paints Faye as a radical hippie with a sordid past, but as far as Samuel knows, his mother was an ordinary girl who married her high-school sweetheart.

Fantastic story! I loved it!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would definitely recommend this audiobook to anyone. It is a rich tale of mythical creatures with an epic "Cinderella story" main character. If you like rooting for the underdog, then you will LOVE THIS BOOK!!!
What other book might you compare Hunters Unlucky to and why?
As I said above, it brought to my mind the situation of rags to riches type story of Cinderella. Although the actual stories are very different, the situation of the main character is what makes me think about the similarities.
What about Rish Outfield’s performance did you like?
Mr. Outfield did a fantastic characterization of the different voices and accents. They stayed true to themselves throughout the entire 24+ hours of audio. It was a monumental feat, and he did it exceedingly well.
Any additional comments?
You won't go wrong with this book. It is a fantastic story. The characters are very original and unique. Ms. Hilton is a master story teller.

A great but complicated story
The performance and writing was exceptional, but the history of the two main species in the story was so confusing I have to listen to it again. I'm not certain in my mind how everything is laid out in time and place. Abbie is a great writer but I think she overdid herself this time. Still 4/5 stars. I loved Storm and his group of friends. I wanted to root for certain character but the more I got into the story the less I understood what was going on. I think I need a second listen.

An Epic Audio Story Lion King meets Watership Down
Where does Hunters Unlucky rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
An Epic audio book at over 24 Hours its really 3 books in one
What was one of the most memorable moments of Hunters Unlucky?
When Storm the main character escapes his pursuers by hiding under water.
What does Rish Outfield bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The book is brought to life by Rish's naration although some of the voices are a little too Disney for my taste this may well suit the intended younger Audience.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
In a land between lands and a time between times the Lion King meets Water ship Down.
Any additional comments?
May not be suitable for younger children due to some more graphic scenes, relating to deaths and the violence of the animal nature of these.

Who wants to read an animal story? You do!
What made the experience of listening to Hunters Unlucky the most enjoyable?
The amazing characters, brilliant story-telling.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Arcove. Because he was the villain who wasn't. Dynamic, frightening, fascinating.
Which character – as performed by Rish Outfield – was your favorite?
This performer brought all of his characters to individual life.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Not for the children!
Any additional comments?
Don't miss this wonderful book. I knew Abby Hilton was special. And yet, I couldn't bring myself to read a book starring all animals. But she offered the first 2 books in the story for free; and I didn't even get through the first one before I knew I had to get the whole audiobook. It was impossible to put down. I'm already looking forward to my next long-distance drive when I will listen to the whole thing again.

Excellent!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, I would recommend this book...mostly to people who enjoy fantasy fiction. The story was well written and the narrator was amazing.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Hunters Unlucky?
When Storm was first grouped up on the ice and his escape.
What about Rish Outfield’s performance did you like?
What was not to like? He has an amazing voice and I find it difficult to believe he could change his voice so often for each character. Wow...just wow.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I would have liked to...but no, I broke it up in several sittings.
Any additional comments?

My 9-year-old says this is his favorite book ever!
Hunters Unlucky is such a great story, and quite unique. I loved it, and am listening through it for a second time. My 13yo saw the paperback -- a 692 page brick -- on my bookshelf and asked about it. They read it, and loved it. Then my 9yo read it. It is *not* large text, and it is almost seven hundred pages. He *devoured* it in 3 days. I was stunned. He's a good reader, but not usually *quite* that voracious.
This book is absolutely excellent for adults and kids alike (advanced 9yos, middle graders and up).
