About this listen

In a radically new translation and interpretation of the I Ching, David Hinton strips this ancient Chinese masterwork of the usual apparatus and discovers a deeply poetic and philosophical text. Teasing out an elegant vision of the cosmos as ever-changing yet harmonious, Hinton reveals the seed from which Chinese philosophy, poetry, and painting grew. Although it was and is widely used for divination, the I Ching is also a book of poetic philosophy, deeply valued by artists and intellectuals, and Hinton's translation restores it to its original lyrical form. Previous translations have rendered the I Ching as a divination text full of arcane language and extensive commentary. Though informative, these versions rarely hint at the work's philosophical heart, let alone its literary beauty. Here, Hinton translates only the original strata of the text, revealing a fully formed work of literature in its own right. The result is full of wild imagery, fables, aphorisms, and stories.

Critic reviews

"[The I Ching is] the only thing that is amazingly true, period.... You don't have to believe anything to read it, because besides being a great book to believe in, it's also very fantastic poetry." (Bob Dylan)

Without an accompanying PDF, there is soooo much context missing in this book. As every other mention of the I Ching follows with an image. We need these images in PDF or this is an utter disappointment.

If you could sum up I Ching in three words, what would they be?
Wild-eyed excellence

What did you like best about this story?
Poetic deluge, provides thunderbolts of insight, with a flash like lightening swift delivery of the 64 hexagrams. Energetic, unconventional, and thoroughly enjoyable.

What does Tom Zingarelli bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Soars above other more pedantic translations.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes. Liberates creativity. All possibilities are in your face.

But the body of the work is much too repetitive.
It seems like a lot of filler.
Though the language is patriarchal and a bit dated the Richard Wilhelm I Ching is still - when it comes to depth of insight - head and shoulders above any other version.

The introduction is the best part...

Very interesting oriental philosophy. Wisdom sayings were based on nature and presented in a nonlinear manner

I Ching Observations

No pdf is included. The entire content is essentially a description of pictures, without the pictures. They should have included a pdf with the pictograms. The topic might not lend itself to audiobook format.

This is the audio of a visual presentation

I would rather than with it have chosen maybe one or two interpretations and explain the diagrams little bit more it would’ve been more helpful you know as a reader or listener

So many different interpretations
