About this listen

Two People. Two Different Lives. One Love.

Like the Roman matron for whom she is named, plain but clever Octavia seems destined for abandonment. Handsome, fun-loving and heir to an earldom, Dorian is the opposite. In Regency London, life for him is a game in which other people, including Octavia, are his pawns. Everyone loves him until he does the unspeakable: he runs off with anther man's wife.

Despite the permanent ache in her heart, Octavia spends her early and middle years building a life she loves as a village apothecary with people who love and appreciate her. Exiled Dorian spends most of his in regret.

When Fate brings them back together, will their shared memory keep them apart? Or can the past be forgotten and deep wounds be healed?

This story, told with wit and humour by the two main characters in turn, and shifting from Italy to England over a spread of more than twenty years, demonstrates the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring power of love.

This is a talented writer

This author is generally an automatic purchase for me. Her stories are unique, and she’s an excellent writer. Her work is a refreshing departure from the typical low- to mid-level authors in the clean Regency genre. This one wasn’t a typical romance, but it was still an intriguing tale. I’d say the female was the lead character, but we got to know the MMC during his chapters. While he wasn’t likable, his part of the story was germane to the plot, and he does have a satisfying arc. Octavia’s long-term love for him was hard to grasp—maybe it was an oxytocin lock or limerence that made her connect to him instantly, and love someone uninterested in her. She was a strong, kind, and resourceful person, who lived a full life, despite a worthless father and clueless love interest. The latter half of the book, especially, drew me in. First person is my least favorite style, but this was still enjoyable. Though I hope future books will be in third person.
