Non a caso la protagonista femminile èuna discendente di Omero che si converte al Cristianesimo. Il protagonista, giovane cristiano che, persa la fede, la ritrova poi in seguito ad eventi tragici, racconta le sue avventure tra i Franchi e i Druidi. Nell'opera viene presentato il paganesimo ormai agonizzante e la religione cristiana nascente.
