About this listen
The ghost of a little girl will stop at nothing to get a mother.
After a crushing family tragedy, Melinda inherits her aunt’s farm in Maddison, Indiana - a town where strange things seem to happen. The farm was once lovely, but her aunt was a hoarder and the house is packed with boxes, toys and dolls.
Lots of dolls. Dolls with secrets.
Even hoarded, the farm should be the perfect place for her family to heal and rebuild. Melinda, her husband and teenage daughter soon realize they’ve inherited more than the farm.
As they clear the house of boxes, their true inheritance is released. Can Melinda’s mind survive the legacy left to her? Can her family?

Enjoy this short excerpt:
The hall passage is lighter now than it was on our trip in. Every door on this hall except the laundry was closed before. The door to the dining, turned sewing, turned doll room is open now. My dog, Mojo, growls into the room.
I peek slowly around the jamb.
Eyes, thousands of eyes.
Dolls cover every available space. Shelves and tables and chairs full of dolls. Even the picture window with the seat below is full of dolls. The afternoon sunshine through the window stings my eyes after the darkness of the crowded hall.
The sun glints off their eyes in thousands of pinpricks of light, mesmerizing, hypnotizing.
Mojo barks suddenly, sharp and angry. A strong force pushes me into the room. The surprise of the shove knocks the jars of beef out of my arms.
The glass jars hit the floor. The sound of shattering glass and a slamming door fill the room simultaneously.
The beef chunks and broken jars swim in a pool of congealed juice and fat. The mess looks disgusting.
Hungry, Mojo rushes to the pool, and gulps down the beef.
“Stop, you’ll get cut,” I shout.
Mojo looks up as he wolfs down a chunk of beef. Juice runs out of his mouth, as does a thin stream of blood.
Someone pushed me in here. My shoulders still sting from the rough shove, my knee aches from landing on the floor.
Thousands of doll eyes stare with blank expressions.
Frantic to escape them, I attempt to open the door. My hand slips off the knob, slick with blood.
“What the?” I find a small cut at the base of a finger. “Crap.” I shove the bleeding finger into my mouth. Added to the adrenaline and fear, the sick taste of blood makes my stomach flip.
With my unhurt hand, I try the knob again. I don’t slip off this time, but it won’t turn.
The door is locked.
Done with licking the last drips off the floor, Mojo scratches at the locked door.
I pound on the wood, screaming for Melinda.
She doesn’t come.
The dolls seem to be sucking up all the air.
“Melinda?” I call again, confused why she won’t help us, angry she’s not coming. I try calling her cell phone, but it goes to voicemail.
I scream her name once more. I hear faint voices, so faint, I might be imagining it. Mojo pushes onto my lap and whines.
I try to be brave, to wait. After a few minutes, I call Dad at work. After I hang up with Dad, I try Melinda again. She still ignores me.
I wrap my arms around Mojo. The house creaks around us, as we wait for Dad.
The dolls watch us wait.
They seem to be waiting too.

Story
Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Terrible Robot Narration
This was a cool concept on the creepy doll story. But it wasn’t good enough to carry off with a robot voice narration.
I am begging Audible not to continue using the AI, robot voices to narrate. It kills the story.

Good book, but so much is lost with the AI narration.
I like the story, but it's harder to follow with AI. While the voice is clear, the emotions are not where they'd be expected. Nor is there clear clarification between people or entities. It's not much worse than some of the people I've heard, but not as good as it could be.
