In corsia centrale l'olandese Peter Van der Hoogeband, campione olimpico sui 200 crawl a Sydney 2000, capace quindi di vincere in casa di una nazione, l'Australia, che in quella olimpiade, contava di fare da mattatrice nel nuoto, grazie in particolare a un giovanissimo campione: Ian Thorpe.
