Publisher's summary

Rue Brennan’s name means “regret” and “sorrow”. And by golly, she’s determined to live up to that name. Living in a tiny studio apartment in the Lower East Side of Manhattan and piecing together odd jobs as a freelance journalist and part-time figure model, her boyfriend, Spencer, thinks she can do better. Spencer Hargrove is all about appearances and is about to unveil a new product created by his up-and-coming startup, SpencerTech, at the height of the tech boom. He convinces Rue to take a job as an administrative assistant working for cyber forensic consultant and private investigator Darwin Fennec, believing it to be a career more befitting a woman of her stage in life.

In the meantime, her hyperactive upstairs neighbor Midge, prone to day drinking and saying whatever comes into her head, would rather see Rue ditch Spencer and spend her time with Darwin instead. Midge may get her wish, but not in the way she intended. In an unexpected twist of fate, Darwin and Rue find themselves attending the theater on the same night, each witnessing the murder of a stage actress. The only problem is, they both have become suspects, and each other’s alibis—ensuring they’ll have to spend more time together, after all, trying to clear each other’s names. All that, of course, is assuming that one of them isn’t guilty.

Quirky in a fun way

The audiobook gave me a more rich experience I think than reading it.

Story:

I really like that it was written in the time frame of 1997. Knowing what was going on in my life at the time, and the technology as well, it was nostalgic for me... even though I was born in the early 60s. The 90s were an eventful part of my life. The story was accurate with the times and very well done. The author securely set you in that time frame with grace.

I will admit, this genre isn't typically the genre I buy, Though I have bought a series in this genre before and enjoyed it. So I thought why not!? I'm glad I did. I won't give spoilers, but Rue and Midge are quite the pair.

The author did a great job making each character rich in a shorter. I like them both a lot but for different reasons. That is a sign of a great author. Well done!

Performance:

The ONLY reason this audiobook didn't get 5 stars from me was the quality difference between the male and female voices was distracting for the first few chapters. Don't get me wrong, Danielle and Graham did a great job narrating, but it didn't take me long to adjust.

Overall, thanks for the great experience.
