Nel 1904, durante una vacanza a El Cairo, Aleister Crowley è protagonista di un evento mistico fuori dal normale. Edit Rose, la moglie del Maestro, all'improvviso è posseduta da un'entità superiore.
Seguendo in maniera precisa le indicazioni della moglie, attraverso cui parlava questa misteriosa entità, Crowley riesce ad invocare la divinità egizia Horus. Durante il colloquio con il dio Crowley viene a conoscenza dell'inizio di un nuovo eone magico e riceve direttamente dal dio l'incarico di essere il suo Profeta in Terra.
Durante questo stato di comunione con la divinità, Crowley trascrive sotto dettatura "Il Libro della Legge". A dettare il testo però non è il dio Horus, ma una voce che appartiene allo spirito Ai-wass, il ministro di Horus.
Oltre alle lettere e alle parole, Ai-wass detta al Maestro anche un complesso codice cifrato composto da numeri che, ad oggi, nessuno è mai riuscito a decifrare, nemmeno lo stesso Crowley. In seguito a questa esperienza il Maestro fonderà il culto di Thelema che verrà poi praticato nei riti della confraternita Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O.).
