Il comandante del campo Rudolf Höss, processato dopo la guerra, si dichiarò responsabile dell'eliminazione di due milioni e mezzo di persone, più «un altro mezzo milione di morti per fame e malattie». E Auschwitz ne è il simbolo, il più eloquente di tutti, perché più di tutti gli altri campi dette il suo spaventoso contributo alla Soluzione Finale.
