About this listen

Separated from friends and family and haunted by personal demons, park ranger Anna Pigeon finds solace in the quiet ruins of the Anasazi civilization of Colorado's Mesa Verde. But the rugged beauty of the park and the mystery of the Anasazi are cruelly overshadowed by danger and death. Lately, visitors to Mesa Verde have been bringing home more than photos - they're also carrying a strange, deadly disease, and once it strikes, Anna Pigeon must find the very human source of the evil wind.

a literate adventure with the intrepid Anna Pigeon

Loved every winding trail of this story. Anna is a brave, complex, lovable, and admirable character and Ms Barr is a gifted writer, a superb prose stylist and fine story teller. And I can't imagine a better narrator for these novels than Barbara Rosenblatt, her rendering full of nuance and never a false note.

Sound Quality Issues

We always enjoy listening to Nevada Barr’s books, and this one was no exception, but the sound quality left a lot to be desired. We had to rewind many, many times to understand the words being spoken.

Enjoyable whodunit

Just the right blend of romping through parklands, catching the bad guys, and entertaining dialog.

Could not finish book because of sound quality.

I have listened to hundreds of books on Audible and this is the first time I’ve had to stop listening and read the book because the sound quality is horrible and worsens as the book goes on.

Agree on sound quality

When I first read the reviews on sound quality, I thought they were maybe overblown. But I could not listen to this book through my car stereo even on full treble. Some of the names, places and words were muffled and it was hard to follow to story. I could listen with headphones and some later parts seemed more clear. All that said, the story was on par with the prior books and I enjoyed it overall.

Good audio book

Loved the location in Mesa Verde national park. I have been there and that made the book much more interesting. Audio quality was not as good as most audio books. It was hard to hear without headphones.

Story

Narration difficult to understand at
times. Otherwise good interesting story. Anna has her hands full.

Sound quality is terrible.

I bought a new pair of headphones because mine went through the wash and the audio was horrible. Turns out it wasn’t my headphones. It’s the sound quality. Ruined the book for me.

Difficult to hear despite good EarPods

We wanted to read/hear this as we were visiting Mesa Verde.
The story is palatable. The characters unsympathetic. The conclusion is predictable.

All would be tolerable for the pleasure of hearing the references to places within the National Park and some valuable history of the Ancient Peoples who lived there.

But the narrator was horrible. Her intonation was so raspy and guttural and her habit of dropping her voice at the end of a sentence so pervasive, that listening on the car speakers was impossible even at maximum volume.
Using excellent ear pods, (we each wore one apiece) many sentences were unheard at the “period” of the sentence.
We kept asking one another, “ What did she say?!”
I generally listen to audiobooks at 1.5 speed.
To understand the majority of this book, I had to slow it to 1.0.
I will not listen to this narrator again.
