 Existe en este país, el único de América que disolvió el ejército en 1948, una gran tradición periodística.
Han existido y existen publicaciones de todos los temas, tanto políticos, culturales, científicos, generales, gremiales y religiosos, como de protesta, humorísticas, etc.
Por otro lado, con la incorporación masiva a finales del siglo XX de Internet en los hogares, salas de redacción, instituciones educativas y otros ámbitos, surgió el periodismo digital y ciudadano que en esta porción geográfica de Centroamérica ha encontrado un campo propicio para desarrollarse.
Son centenares las revistas en papel que también circulan en la Web. Algunas publicaciones periódicas, ante dificultades económicas, en vez de desaparecer han optado por el soporte digital.
Aparte de ello, los grandes periódicos, además de publicarse en papel, tienen una edición electrónica, bien de uso libre o mediante suscripción. Se publican periódicos y revistas en lenguas distintas al español. Con soporte digital me he propuesto adentrarme en las entrañas en la historia de la imprenta y el periodismo en América Latina.
