Famed historian and author of the groundbreaking "The Case for Colonialism" demonstrates that, contrary to modern presuppositions, German colonialism from its early roots to the mid-twentieth century was overall a force for good in the world where development was encouraged and native governance flourished.

Historian and university professor, Bruce Gilley, delves into the history of German colonialism from its earliest roots through the 20th century, demonstrating that contrary to modern presuppositions, it served as a global force for good—elevating the lives of its subjects and encouraging scientific development while allowing native cultures to flourish within its governance.

This book isv an excellent and sorely needed attempt to de-politize events of the past!. The author provides an essential template for historians of colonialism to follow.

Must Read!

Excellent correction for the Marxist/Communist overtaking of Academia. Fact based research versus Emotionalism! This book, among other things, serves to fight back against the monolithic tyranny of present day wokeism!

Historic and Provocative

Gilley does a marvelous job tracking the actual record of German Colonialism, detailing its achievements and foibles. His writing on the history is excellent and any one interested in history would benefit from this book.

I found Gilley's assertion that the failure of the colonial project emboldened Fascist and Marxist ideologies to be less strong than I expected. Would love to see an expansion on this idea.

Excellent defense of a time when Germany was a much greater nation!

Before reading this book I had never heard about German colonialism, but now that I have I can see that the same garbage that the left spews here in America is the same line of attack that they use the world over. They distort history to fit their own goals which is not to tell the truth about history, but to spread Marxism around the world. This is an excellent book that truly exposes another front of the leftist attack on truth and is a must read!

Finally, honesty prevails.

Mr. Gilley provides a welcome dose of empirical evidence to counter the radical anti-western blather found everywhere. May this finely written, occasionally witty, work lead a turning tide of honest scholastic writing. Thoroughly enjoyable, I am eagerly reading through the bibliography to find more material. I’m looking for his other books now.
