About this listen

A novel based on the life of Ellen Breakell Neibaur, a Victorian-era pioneer who, despite unending trials, kept trekking forward.

Ellen has made the most reprehensible choice of her life and must abide by the consequences. But when strange dreams lead her and Alexander, the Prussian dentist, to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she wonders if there might be a measure of hope for her—if she works hard enough.

Persecution, sacrifice, and loss flood her life like the River Ribble in a squall, and Ellen must decide if love and faith are worth losing everything she’s ever known.

From the industrial town of Preston, England to Nauvoo and, finally, Salt Lake City, Ellen and her ever-growing family seek a place where they are free to live and worship in peace.

Fans of These is My Words by Nancy E. Turner and The Work and the Glory by Gerald N. Lund will love this poignant story.

The story was very touching and I can tell a lot of attention to history and detail was given. I’m thankful for the opportunity to really empathize with the struggles and what life would have been like for these pioneers. I thought that the AI narration was fine, it didn’t bother me at all.

Really helps you understand what life was like for early Mormons.
