About this listen

When is forgiveness more than a word? When is forgiveness an act that becomes a gift of grace?

Cherie Hollister is a widowed mother of three young daughters after the tragic death of her husband in a military training exercise. She is confronted in her tiny apartment by her mother who asks her to be tested as a potential donor for her brother, Jake, a recovering drug addict who needs a kidney transplant. Glancing at eight-year-old Molly, whose scars and hearing loss were brought about by Jake’s negligence, Cherie fumes at the request. Her faith tells her to forgive her brother, but can she choose to save the man she has hated since the night of the fire.

In This Lifetime is a great read and I spent a couple of late nights paging through it because I couldn't put it down. Christine Anderson's characters are your neighbors and your friends, all trying to navigate some pretty difficult life terrain as we all do: imperfectly. The story is compelling and you find yourself asking that age-old question: "What would I do?"

I decided to revisit the book when it came out on Audible with one fear: the narrator. Now, I don't know about you, but a bad narrator will kill a good book for me. Not so in the case of In This Lifetime. It almost seems as though it was written for Sarah Kuklis to read, and as I listened, I felt like a good friend was telling me a story. I couldn't wait for the opportunity to grab my headphones and go back into Anderson's world.
