About this listen

In the 21st century, Germany's Third Reich continues to thrive after its victory in World War II - keeping most of Europe and North America under its heel. But within the heart of the Nazi regime, a secret lives. Under a perfect Aryan facade, Jews survive - living their lives, raising their families, and fearing discovery....

What will happen next? A standalone book. One of the best of Turtledove’s. You can really feel what the characters are experiencing.

The constant tension of Jews vs Reich

Really interesting alt historical fiction. Read after the fantastic SSGB alt history mystery set in Great Britain. Some very tense moments, lots of bridge hands, but not depths of graphic brutality as in Man in the High Castle video, I honestly cannot remember book details to that degree; I sadly know how realistic MITHC was, but it was extremely tough to watch and most folks I know gave up with certain horrific events.
I think great optimism as re: fall of USSR, Arab Spring. Written 2019.

Living Secretly Under the Nazis

The narrator is clearly excellent in English, but over-enunciates any and all German ways in a way that is grating. For example, the main character’s 2-syllable name (Heinrich) gains an extra syllable (becoming Hein-er-ich). This may be a minor complaint, but over the course of a 15+ hour book, it becomes a major distraction.

Distractedly over-enunciated German

The book is good at the end of the day. If you don't play bridge there are some seemingly endless stretched with painful detail about games of bridge. If you can get past that the book is pretty interesting.

Worth fighting through the endless bridge talk

Turtledove still has more alternate history ideas, and this proves it. A take on what occurred in the USSR, but with humanized Nazi's, and a strong ending, one that means hope still lives for Jews. Hope he keeps up the work as long as he can in the years to come.

One of his best works

An interesting take on what might have been. The narrator has a thick German accent which can be annoying at times.

Interesting read

What would have happened if NAZI Germany had won WW2? Harry Turtledove weaves a frighteningly realistic tale of German Jews secretly living in Berlin in the 21st century. How they passed on the knowledge of their heratiage. This storyline, without the efforts of our Greatest Generation might have been. But thankfully it is not. Thank you Harry.

Frighteningly realistic

for starters, serbian chetnicks handed over 14 thausand jews and made sure everyone of them was properly registered with Gestapo.
only place in balkans to offer sanctuary was Albania, 0 jews were captured in Albania.
i understand this is an alternative history sci-fi, but showing serbs as saviour of jews will just insult the victims in any alternative univers.
i gave up listening after 1 hour.

Jews in Serbia

This was a great book. Admittedly, it is a bit slow. It’s focus is on a small group of regular people rather than being focused on huge events throughout. That being said, the story is very good, and it makes you care about the characters. This is probably the most believable historical fiction I have read.

The narrator is pretty good as well. Initially I thought some of the voices were a bit overdone, but after a while either the voices start to fit the characters or I just stopped noticing it.

Good book. A bit slow, but it is a great story.

I loved the concept foe the book but found the actual writing quite clumsy and rambling. The real problem was the narrator though .

Posssibly worst narrator I have w countered and slow story
