 In dit hoorcollege geeft Maarten van Rossem zijn visie op de ontstaansgeschiedenis van het industriële westen. Hij verhaalt over de ontwikkelingen die de industriële revolutie in Engeland mogelijk maakten en waarom die juist in Engeland en niet in China plaatsvonden.

Natuurwetenschappelijke ontdekkingen in de 17e eeuw en de behoefte om mijngangen droog te houden, leidden in Engeland rond 1700 tot de uitvinding van de eerste stoommachine. Door de ruime beschikbaarheid van steenkool als brandstof waren verschillende uitvinders in staat verbeteringen aan te brengen aan deze machine. Daardoor kon de katoenfabricage worden gemechaniseerd en konden treinen en schepen met stoom worden aangedreven. Deze maakten de Europese militaire en economische expansie over de gehele wereld mogelijk. Juist door een economische en commerciële prikkel ontstond in de negentiende eeuw de West-Europese superioriteit; een prikkel die in China destijds ontbrak.
