About this listen

A dramatic and compelling true-crime psychological thriller

This incredible story shows how John Douglas tracked and participated in the hunt for one of the most notorious serial killers in US history. For 31 years a man who called himself BTK (Bind, Torture, Kill) terrorized the city of Wichita, Kansas, sexually assaulting and strangling a series of women, taunting the police with frequent communications, and bragging about his crimes to local newspapers and TV stations. After disappearing for nine years, he suddenly reappeared, complaining that no one was paying enough attention to him and claiming that he had committed other crimes for which he had not been given credit. When he was ultimately captured, BTK was shockingly revealed to be Dennis Rader, a 61-year-old married man with two children.

As usual the content and story of a John Douglas book is without compare when it comes to the true crime genre, but the narrating of this book is like having a kindergartener do it. Constant mispronounced words etc. Who narrates a book from a former FBI agent and can't pronounce Quantico? or Et cetera? Are you serious? those are just two of the many examples of the constant errors in the narrating. Not to mention it sounds like he narrated in in his bathroom. I recommend reading this book, but def not listening to it.

WORST NARRATION EVER!

For those interested in true crime and more specifically the psychology and crimes of serial offenders, there is no better author than FBI profiler John Douglas. In addition to his intimate, experience-driven insights into the minds of the most depraved murderers, his immaculate and descriptive writing style allow the audience to fully envelope themselves in the times, places, and events he illustrates. Often this quality is utterly bone-chilling, to fantastic effect. The accuracy of facts presented and revelation of exclusive information on the case are delightful for those who seek to know every nitty gritty detail. The story of BTK is one for the ages, and there is no better person to tell it than the Mindhunter himself. The narrator's voice performance was notably grating in my opinion, citing certain mispronunciations and an overall blandness. However, in pushing past those minor grievances I was immediately rewarded with one of the most in-depth and fascinating true crime stories I've read to date.

captivating at every point

The narration is incredibly bad. The word “razed” was pronounced as “razzed.” Did he record the audio by himself? Can I get my credit back? Who let this happen?

I Should Have Read the Reviews

I almost didn't buy this book because of the comments. The only time he mispronounces words is when he is reading BTK'S letters. This is certainly because of BTK's writing errors (as discussed in the book). Don't listen to the Karen's, it's a great listen.

The narration is good.

Overall, great book. I learned far more about the case than I thought I would.

The narration, however, was bad. Sometimes you didn't know where one sentence ended and another paragraph started because the narrator just plowed right through. Then there were the mispronounciations. You'd think whatever production company, much less just the narrator would have checked, but there was ZERO effort to double check a pronunciation. Quantico, which you don't have to be from that area or be that familiar to know that's it's not pronounced kwan-teeek-oh. Or the word, garrote, isn't pronounced like the name Garrett. And Washington "Dull-ez"?! Come on!! Very distracting and busch league narration. A far cry from when Jonathan Groff narrated John Douglas', Killer Across the Table.

Good read, but the narrator phoned it in.

I really enjoyed this book. I found the story gritty and the path from emergence to capture of BTK fascinating.

As most reviews have stated, the narrator is a bit odd. he was fine overall, as in tolerable, but his mispronunciation of words is distracting and jarring.

Quantico as Quanteeco
Garrote as Garrot
Among others.

The words come up often enough that it keeps jarring the narrative.

Great story, poor narration

Very interesting story but the narration ruined it. It seemed like the narrator was reading the text for the first time.

Good story- awful narration

I saw in many other of the reviews that my opinion that this narrator never paid attention in English class. He must pronounces simple words like asphyxiated. He said it, as if it was pronounced a fix a aided. And I also think that John Douglas shoots his horn a little bit too much. He repeats his involvement in high profile cases over and over, like he saying, “look, look at me! I catch bad guys, and built criminal profiling! Look at me! I am not surprised that this one is in the plus catalog and not Worth a credit when it isn’t.

Did the narrator ever take English class?

I couldn't listen to it anymore...
The story is outstanding as usual but the narration is more than horrible. My mind just doesn't register this poor excuse of a boring vomit of words so I stopped around chapter 2 and took the paperback version ott the shelf instead.

Worst. Narration. Ever.

The story was good, as is most of Douglas’s writings, but it would have been nice to have a reader that could pronounce all of the words correctly.

Needed a better reader
