Since its inception, psychology has been engaged in a struggle to establish itself as a legitimate scientific discipline. During the latter half of the 19th century, pioneers such as Wilhelm Wundt and William James tried to differentiate between psychological observation and contemplation in a slow manner. At his laboratory in Leipzig, Wundt placed a particular emphasis on the need for accurate measurement and controlled experimental circumstances, both of which are characteristics of the scientific method.

Through the use of methodical investigation, the field of psychology underwent a transition from philosophical debate to empirical science. Although the ultimate objective of understanding the mind has changed since that time, the purpose of this field has always been to investigate and explain human experience kindly. In psychology, the research methodologies that are utilized serve two interconnected functions.
