About this listen

Some families are created in different ways but are still, in every way, a family.

Writer and star of My Big Fat Greek Wedding Nia Vardalos firmly believed she was supposed to be a mom, but Mother Nature and modern medicine had put her in a headlock. So she made a choice that shocked friends, family, and even herself: with only 14 hours' notice, she adopted a preschooler.

Instant Mom is Vardalos' hilarious and poignant true chronicle of trying to become a mother while fielding nosy "frenemies" and Hollywood reporters asking, "Any baby news?" With her signature wit and candor, she describes her and husband Ian Gomez's bumpy road to parenting, how they found their daughter, and what happened next. Vardalos includes a comprehensive how-to-adopt section and explores innovative ways to conquer the challenges all new moms face, from sleep to personal grooming. She learns that whether via biology, relationship, or adoption - motherhood comes in many forms.

In Instant Mom, Vardalos shares the terrifying joys of parenthood and for the first time reveals her stubborn optimism and perseverance on her trek to finally becoming a mom, instantly.

Great job telling a great story

As a person Who has never been a mother themselves until my two little foster girls were placed in my life, I am so thankful for her fun and enlightening story of what it’s like to be a mom after those many years and what a great person to be able to tell the story when you have the humor that she does

A great book for any parent or parent to be

I really enjoyed this book, and was sad when it ended. It's such a heartfelt and sweet story. It also brought tears to my eyes a few times, and it's funny as hell!

Nia and Ian are so relatable as parents and as people. I wish I could go to one of their dinner parties!

Great for anyone adopting from foster care

It's nice to find a book that focuses on adopting through foster care, since there are not many. And having someone's personal experience is insightful. Although it could have done without all the name dropping and bragging...

Honesty of the experience

Nia does a great job sharing her experience and doesn’t shy away from or try to sugarcoat the reality of fostering to adopt. The realness of her experience and acknowledgment of the struggle of not only her own trauma, but her partner’s trauma, and her daughter’s trauma. This book was very helpful in our journey.

Loved it!

As a new parent, I found myself crying or laughing so hard, I nearly peed. Weirdly enough (or not), I also found myself wishing Nia and Ian could be my parents. Even if you aren't a parent, this is a wonderful read/listen. If you have questions about adoption, it has an invaluable perspective from Nia. It certainly opened my eyes. She is so down to earth, warm and funny and has a great narration style as well. Looking forward to any follow up books. She has such a gift and her family is blessed to have her, as are we.
