仏像は仏教において信仰の対象となるものです。
たいていはお寺に安置されていて誰でも拝むことができますが、「秘仏」といって、普段は見ることのできない仏像もあります。
当初の仏像は、紀元前5世紀頃のインドで仏教を開いた釈迦をモデルにしていました。
その後、人々の多彩な願いに応じるため、さまざまな姿の仏像が登場しました。
日本には6世紀半ばの飛鳥時代に、仏教とほぼ一緒に伝わりました。
平安時代の表情の柔和な仏像、鎌倉時代の力強い仏像など、仏像は時代によって様式が異なります。また、手のポーズにもいろいろな意味があります。
