About this listen
Beginning in a jail cell and ending in a rugby tournament—the true story of how the most inspiring charm offensive in history brought South Africa together.
After being released from prison and winning South Africa’s first free election, Nelson Mandela presided over a country still deeply divided by 50 years of apartheid. His plan was ambitious if not far-fetched: use the national rugby team, the Springboks—long an embodiment of white-supremacist rule—to embody and engage a new South Africa as they prepared to host the 1995 World Cup. The string of wins that followed not only defied the odds, but capped Mandela’s miraculous effort to bring South Africans together again in a hard-won, enduring bond.

Story
He was the wittiest, the prettiest, the strongest, the bravest, and, of course, the greatest (as he told us over and over again). Muhammad Ali was one of the 20th century's greatest radicals and most compelling figures. At his funeral in 2016, eulogists said Ali had transcended race and united the country, but they got it wrong. Race was the theme of Ali's life. He insisted that America come to grips with a Black man who wasn't afraid to speak out or break the rules. He didn't overcome racism. He called it out.

Story
Carver Briggs never thought a simple text would cause a fatal crash, killing his three best friends, Mars, Eli, and Blake. But now Carver can't stop blaming himself for the accident, and, even worse, a powerful judge is pressuring the district attorney to open up a criminal investigation. Luckily, Carver has some unexpected allies: Eli's girlfriend, the only person to stand by him at school; Dr. Mendez, his new therapist; and Blake's grandmother, who asks Carver to spend a "goodbye day" together to share their memories and say a proper farewell.

Story
Written in a beautiful and engaging style, Seven Men addresses what it means (or should mean) to be a man today, at a time when media and popular culture present images of masculinity that are not the picture presented in Scripture and historic civil life. What does it take to be a true exemplar as a father, brother, husband, leader, coach, counselor, change agent, and wise man? What does it mean to stand for honesty, courage, and charity, especially at times when the culture and the world run counter to those values?

Story
In 1652 a small group of Dutch farmers landed on the southernmost tip of Africa. Sent by the powerful Dutch India Company, their mission was simply to grow vegetables and supply ships rounding the cape. The colonists, however, were convinced by their strict Calvinist faith that they were among God's "Elect," chosen to rule over the continent. Their saga - bloody, ferocious, and fervent - would culminate three centuries later in one of the greatest tragedies of history.

Story
Before Adolf Hitler's rise to power in Germany, there was 1924. This was the year of Hitler's final transformation into the self-proclaimed savior and infallible leader who would interpret and distort Germany's historical traditions to support his vision for the Third Reich. Everything that would come - the rallies and riots, the single-minded deployment of a catastrophically evil idea - all of it crystallized in one defining year.

Story
In The Long Hangover, Shaun Walker provides new insight into contemporary Russia and its search for a new identity, telling the story through the country's troubled relationship with its Soviet past. Walker not only explains Vladimir Putin's goals and the government's official manipulations of history, but also focuses on ordinary Russians and their motivations. He charts how Putin raised victory in World War II to the status of a national founding myth in the search for a unifying force to heal a divided country, and shows how dangerous the ramifications of this have been.

Golda Meir was a world figure unlike any other. Born in tsarist Russia in 1898, she immigrated to America in 1906 and grew up in Milwaukee, where from her earliest years she displayed the political consciousness and organizational skills that would eventually catapult her into the inner circles of Israel's founding generation. Moving to mandatory Palestine in 1921 with her husband, the passionate socialist joined a kibbutz but soon left and was hired at a public works office by the man who would become the great love of her life.

More detail than the film
Would you listen to Invictus again? Why?
I loved the film Invictua and truly appreciated how the book filled in details beyond the film, but also reassured me that the basic story of the film was correct. The most valuable part was the description of the communication between Mandela and the radical Afrikaner groups that were threatening war.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Invictus?
Fascinating details about the final game -- namely that Mandela went into BOTH dressing rooms before the game, which seemed surprising. The author allows how showing up in a springbox Jersey in the All-Black dressing room may have thrown players off the game.
What about Gideon Emery’s performance did you like?
Pleasant with an effort to give different accent to different characters. Mandela's accent is just ok.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. Too much detail.
Any additional comments?
It's great when a book reinforces a good film rather than shows its faults. The book gives more balance to the players at lagre, less emphasis on the Matt Damon charcter Pinear, which is only fair.

Inspiring
This is a great illustration of the series of challenges Mandela faced in attaining his goal as well as the ways he dealt with and overcame them. Unlike most revolutionaries, he was concerned not just with eliminating the injustice against which he fought, but also in creating the society that was to follow. Accordingly, the ways in which he fought apartheid were also calculated to create the nonracial society the ANC espoused.
I had known the general outlines of this story, but I had not been aware of, and was particularly impressed by, how many whites, of all political persuasions, Mandela was able to persuade to join him at each step of his struggles.

For Leaders in any field: a must read
A factual account of Nelson Mandela’s rise to the presidency focussing in the main on his ability to read others and adapt his tactics to ensure a positive outcome for all. The pinnacle of the read comes towards the end from his idea of uniting a country through sport and the common bond of a unified country when it is behind a team competing against the rest of the world. Everything you learn about Mandela from his early days you see employed in his presidency and the successes going forward. Never more appropriate than in today’s tumultuous society are the convictions of Nelson Mandela. The world needs more Nelson’s ❤️

Thorough South African History
Having been a fan of the novel Cry, the Beloved Country and other Alan Paton novels, I finally tried this nonfiction book and feel I have a more thorough understanding of South African history, the Afrikaner people, and Mandela’s exemplary leadership style. I enjoyed the voice actor and recommend highly this audio book.

Slow beginning, great ending
The beginning was slow and dry, but the ending was intense. The narrator spoke Xhosa (a South African language) surprisingly well.
