Jack Benny
About this listen
In early 1943, funnyman Jack Benny developed a serious case of pneumonia while traveling to entertain the troops. Someone would need to stand in for the sultan of Sunday night radio. But who?
Orson Welles, the prestige-project prodigy, was an unlikely but inspired choice. Benny’s regular gang is on hand; Phil Harris returns from the military; and additional guests George Burns, Gracie Allen, Barbara Stanwyck, and Butterfly McQueen pop in for a visit. This is The Jack Benny Program like you’ve never heard it before.
EPISODES: From San Diego Marine Base 03-08-42; Cavalcade of Last Eight Years for Jell-O 05-31-42; Kit Carson Benny 02-28-43; Hosts: George Burns and Gracie Allen 03-07-43; Host: Orson Welles (Return of Phil Harris) 03-14-43; Orson Welles Takes Cast to His Movie Lot 03-21-43; Murder at Midnight 03-28-43; Little Red Riding Hood 04-04-43; Jack Returns After Illness 04-11-43; Renting Eddie Cantor's House 05-02-43; Dennis Wants a Raise 11-28-43; Split Personality 05-21-44

Story
When you're the country's favorite radio comedian, you tend to have a lot of friends. And those friends can't wait to have you stop by for a visit, crack a joke or two, play a fiddle solo, or even step out of character for a rare dramatic turn. Such was the case with Jack Benny. Consistently near the top of the rating charts with his own program, Jack was a popular guest artist on dozens of different series.

Jack Benny - he's your friend, my friend, and everyone's friend besides! He's always got his tried and true gang to pal around with, too, but that's not all! Throughout the 1940s and '50s, buddies from Burns & Allen to Bogie & Bacall came to play on his program. There were hilarious guest appearances by kings of comedy (Groucho Marx, Danny Kaye, and Red Skelton) and queens of the screen (Rita Hayworth, Barbara Stanwyck, and Dorothy Lamour).

Lucas knows the perfect night entails just three things: video games, wine, and pad thai. Peanuts are a must! Other people? Not so much. Why complicate things when he’s happy alone? Then one day the apartment board, a vexing trio of authority, rings his doorbell. And Lucas’s solitude takes a startling hike. They demand to see his frying pan. Someone left one next to the recycling room overnight, and instead of removing the errant object, as Lucas suggests, they insist on finding the guilty party. But their plan backfires. Colossally.

Story
Traumatized by the bombing of Dresden at the time he had been imprisoned, Pilgrim drifts through all events and history, sometimes deeply implicated, sometimes a witness. He is surrounded by Vonnegut's usual large cast of continuing characters (notably here the hack science fiction writer Kilgore Trout and the alien Tralfamadorians, who oversee his life and remind him constantly that there is no causation, no order, no motive to existence).

Story
Separated by 10 years, 3,000 miles, and the unrelenting stresses of adulthood, best friends Janet and Serena plan a 40th birthday girls’ trip to reconnect. But after a massive crash, they’re the only survivors to wash ashore on an uncharted Caribbean Island. Armed with only the clothes on their backs and zero survival skills, they fight to overcome hunger, thirst, deadly wildlife—and most terrifyingly—decades of accrued resentment. Can they find their way home, or will they kill each other first?

We all have things in our life that we should know by now, but don’t. Absences in our knowledge and skillset that are frankly shameful in an adult. Things that would be too embarrassing to ask anyone to explain – except our very best friend. Listen in as Mel and Sue tackle their ignorance head on, asking each other to explain something that they still don’t know - but absolutely, as adults, should - from how to parallel park to fully understanding bread (why has it got all those holes in it? What, honestly, is yeast?).
