About this listen

Bertie Wooster's friend Gussie Fink-Nottle is sentenced to 14 days for wading in the fountain at Trafalgar Square. Bertie is worried that Gussie's fiancé Madeline will be angry because she has a distressing habit of turning her attentions to Bertie when her fiancé upsets her. Bertie has the bright idea of impersonating Gussie, and showing up at Deverill Hall. The situation is wonderfully comical when Gussie shows up, posing as Bertie. Only Jeeves, arriving in his own disguise, can sort out this mess.

Critic reviews

"Wodehouse and Cecil are a terrific pair. Cecil's narration is marvelous...[and] highlights the humor of Wodehouse's words." (Publishers Weekly)

"It's hard to imagine anyone better than Jonathan Cecil at reading P.G. Wodehouse.... Listening to him as the deadpan genius butler Jeeves is like listening to a perfect character actor." (AudioFile)

second listening just as good as first

He is a master at storytelling. Granted, his female characters do tend to be a bit rough to relate to - even if they're upper class. But the men fortunately have Jeeves to rescue them from the resulting problems. However, they remind me of women that I've known, and I enjoy to have a good laugh at their expense. Although some other narrators are good, Jonathan Cecil is my favorite.

Guaranteed to cause laughter

Cecil is the perfect narrator for Wooster and Jeeves. One of Wodehouse’s best stories- I’ve listened to this many times and it never fails to cheer me up.

Another gem from Wodehouse and Cecil

This adventure of Bertie and Jeeves plays out along lines similar to the rest of the bunch. The expected WW1-era slang, needless abbreviations, absurd nicknames, literary and biblical allusions, monosyllabic police constable, and diabolical aunts: all present and accounted for. The denouement was particularly gruntling this time around. And Jonathan Cecil still has my vote for best audiobook narrator. It feels like listening to a full-cast drama. Pip pip!

Classic Writing, Great Reader

Delightful humorous turns of phrase interpreted by the perfect reader. Many have read Wodehouse, but few do it justice like this.

You'll laugh out loud.

If you could sum up Jeeves and the Mating Season in three words, what would they be?

Superb language humor.

Have you listened to any of Jonathan Cecil’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This was the first Cecil recording I had heard, and I am definitely coming back for more. He does a fabulous job of bringing the characters to life and expressing their pesonalities through his voice variation. He does a perfect voice for Jeeves.

I have listened to it many times.

I got my credit’s worth out of this book. It can be enjoyed many times as the plot is so contorted it is easily forgotten andirrelevant. The glory of the book is in the telling of it. Wodehouse’s use of language and JonathonCecil’s voice acting are superb.

Excellent

Excellent writing. Wodehouse is at the top of his form. Light attractive reading as Jeeves would say.

Really loved how this one wrapped up in the end.

The buildup on this one had me wondering how it could possibly work out all right and yet the ending was absolutely worth the wait. And as always, Jonathan Cecil did an amazing job narrating.
