Joe Foss
Joseph Jacob Foss (1915-2003) was a Marine Corps major and a fighter ace in World War II. He received the Medal of Honor for his role in air combat during the Guadalcanal Campaign.
Joe Foss Flying Marine (1943) deals with the daily bombings and nightly shelling of the field and their camp, the disease, the lack of replacement planes and the valiant stand made by the Marines to keep the Japanese from retaking the field. From 9 October to 19 November 1942, Foss personally shot down 23 Japanese planes and led a large number of escort missions, covering reconnaissance, bombing and photographing planes and surface craft.
His inspiring leadership, exceptional flying skills, and remarkable fighting spirit were pivotal factors in the defense of strategic American positions on Guadalcanal.
