About this listen

It is 1879 Germany, and 19-year-old Johannes Schmidt is a button maker in the small town of Bollen, Germany. It’s hard work, but three generations of Schmidt men have supported their families making buttons. Suddenly, between losing his father and the Long Depression in Germany, Johannes is faced with hard decisions about his button making in Germany.

Women are interested in the eligible and handsome young button maker, but Johannes is holding out for that special woman his father said he would someday meet. He meets a scared and timid girl named Berta who is also dealing with grief and loneliness. Romance and marriage ensues and then they must make a difficult decision that might disrupt their future happiness.

Come along on the couple’s poignant journey to heal from grief, find love and happiness, and bolster the courage to find a new life in a land called America. It’s quite a ride, a bumpy one, but so worth it in the end.
