About this listen

The gritty, Depression-era memoir of a feisty grandmother born into extreme hardship in colonial New Zealand, "Just Me: The Life Story of a Nobody" recalls a time when brave pioneers transformed scrub into fertile farm land. Susan McKearney was born a year after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, and lived through wars, pandemics and economic depressions. After enduring a violent, motherless childhood, she married a labourer and bore seven children, two of whom died young. Part social commentator, part desperate housewife, Mrs. McKearney shares horror stories, light comedy, and real-time observations in a conversational style belying her limited education. Much has been written about both the Depression and colonial times, but relatively little from the perspective of a working-class woman on the front line. Susan McKearney is therefore somewhat of a pioneer in this field. Originally published in 1938, this is a remarkable book that deserves to be rediscovered by a 21st century audience.
