Publisher's summary

Some women are destined to arouse in men either fierce hatred or insatiable desire. Such a woman was Katie Mulholland.

At 15, a scullery maid in the house of the Rosires, she had been raped by the master. Now, many years later, she had enough money to maintain three carriages if she wanted to, and she was on her way to see Bernard Rosier under very different circumstances.

There was no pride in Katie Mulholland's heart, however, only fear, for half of Tyneside still talked about the way she had flouted convention, and sniggered about the way she had made her money. So she had decided that her only hope was to climb above them, and that she would conquer her fear with power....

A good read!

The author tells a good tale. Keeps you wanting to find out what happens next. Some very likable characters. Others to despise. Would recommend.

You Will Get Lost in this Story

Wanted this story to go on and on. Loved the many characters that were well developed. The narration was excellent. How can one perform so many different voices distinct to each character so well?
With tears and joy this book had it all and I'm looking forward to enjoying more books by this author.

Solid story and excellent narration

Until now I've only watched movies based on books written by Ms. Cookson.
I can only say that her movies were all pretty good but her books and writing are outstanding.

Excellent character development and realistic human interactions and behavior.

Loved it!

It's hard for me to find a book over 20 hours that I can't wait to listen to, but this book was great. It is all clean language which was a definite plus!

Loved it!

C. C. has become one of my favorite authors as of late. The characters have so much depth and the storyline never lags! The life story of Kate Mulholland was tragic yet heroic, intense yet subdued. Basically, all the feels! Also, I am in love with Susan Jameson's narration. I have been referring to my father as "me Da" and trying to imitate some of the characters accents. It sounds very strange with my Southern accent, admittedly lol. This is the fifth book I've read from C. C. and it's my favorite! Ms. Jameson does an amazing job of bringing the authors story to life.

Epic tale of the long life of great lady

Loved this story and narration. It was one that was hard to break away from and I went through it pretty quickly. There were some parts that were a stretch of believability. Overall, though, it represented the hard life of a woman of her age. Thankfully, there were good patches to balance out the bad. The main villain was horrific, but there was a hero or two. The story got a bit long toward the end -- it covered almost a century -- but I could see the need for it. Narration was really good, except for maybe the American accent. That did taint my opinion of the American dude. But it was still a great story, and I was happy with it.
