Publisher's summary

A woman on the run faces a baffling mystery posed by her new lover - Anxious the police will blame her for a violent crime she became entangled in, Joan formulates a plan. Being raised by a skilled poacher taught her plenty of tricks; a key to her lover's unused country cottage is all she needs to lie low. The arrival of handsome gamekeeper Ken on the scene is a welcome surprise, but there's speculation in the village about the disappearance of his wife. Could she really have been killed? And if so, by whom?

A Female version of Keith Calder . . . in tone.

This is quite the romp. The story is especially enjoyable after having read the Keith Calder series (also by Hammond) and the Honey Laird series (by Hammond also). The main character is deliciously on the edge of wicked, but yet sticking fast to her moral code. She's the daughter of a Keeper Turned Poacher and a mother with scruples.

As she flees town, we find out about her fascinating and checkered past. She goes to her ex lover's seldom used country cottage to regroup. There she encounters a keeper with more book learning than practical knowledge and gives him a hand, along with her heart. The only snag is that he has a missing wife that casts a shadow over their future.

Keith Calder has a small role in the book, he gives advice. Honey Laird is the investigator--also a relatively small role.
