About this listen

Keith Haring is synonymous with the downtown New York art scene of the 1980s. His artwork - with its simple, bold lines and dynamic figures in motion - filtered in to the world's consciousness and is still instantly recognizable, 20 years after his death. This Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition, adapted for audio, is a remarkable glimpse of a man who, in his quest to become an artist, instead became an icon.

Keith was an incredibly smart, sensitive, thoughtful and loving human being. It’s incredible beautiful to hear his life through his words. AIDs took far too many people away before their prime, and it’s a blessing to have the remnants of what they left behind. You are missed, Keith.

Full disclosure, Keith Haring is my all-time favorite artist. Therefore I was pretty sure I was going to find his journal interesting. I was not disappointed. Especially, after finishing the first couple years when he is a bit pretentious in his writing. But he's just coming out of his teens so it's understandable - especially to someone in their 50s like myself. After a couple of unrecorded years, the journal picks up in the mid-80s as his career begins to skyrocket and does not return to Earth. Keith freely shares his thoughts on the art-world, his friendships and loves, and his unfortunate, impending death. I'm very happy I listened. I feel I have a better grasp at understanding his art and the man, himself.

A great listen for Haring fans
