Die Geschichte fängt mit einem tragischen Vorfall an: Im Mercy-West Haven Hospital in Connecticut stirbt ein Baby. Angeklagt ist die afroamerikanische Säuglingsschwester Ruth Jefferson. Ruth hatte eingriffen, als die Atmung des Jungen aussetzte, obwohl ihr die Versorgung des Säuglings von der Klinikleitung im Namen der Eltern untersagt worden war. Nun wird Ruth für den Tod des Jungen verantwortlich gemacht, obwohl die medizinischen Erkenntnisse sie von jeder Schuld freisprechen...
