L'autrice è una scrittrice britannica e famosa giallista. Questo suo romanzo (dal titolo originale "What really happened?" fu pubblicato nel 1926, e, come altri suoi romanzi, messo in scena nel 1932. Lungi dall'essere un giallo nel senso classico che diamo a questa parola, la narrazione squisitamente psicologica di un crimine.
Della sua realtà processuale, che è tutta diversa da ciò che accadde realmente, come espresso dal titolo originale, e come è la convinzione generale più volte sottolineata dall'autrice. Il romanzo, ambientato in una tipica villa della campagna inglese, ha un sapore storico e interessante.
