Ma, come in tutte le religioni, dietro alle colorite e folcloristiche apparenze dei riti e delle cerimonie, che distraggono e attraggono i cittadini, si nascondono le fosche e losche realtà dell'uso e dell'abuso del potere, che ammaliano e corrompono i politici.
Piergiorgio Odifreddi dedica questo libro a svelare le contraddizioni nascoste e le distorsioni lampanti della democrazia. Inizia sezionando con il bisturi della logica concetti come la cittadinanza (perché mai la può avere il discendente di un coevo di Cavour, ma non chi frequenta oggi le scuole in Italia?) e lo Stato, in quanto area racchiusa in confini spesso discutibili e non democratici, nel senso di non accettati dal popolo, come ha dimostrato il recente esempio della Catalogna. Prosegue poi con la Costituzione e i tentativi di manipolarla, i diritti e i diversi modi di intendere il "dovere" e il "volere", e i candidati, candidi solo nel nome, per approdare alle odiatissime tasse imposte dallo Stato vampiro.
Il libro procede con luciferina chiarezza per parole chiave, analizzando minuziosamente la democrazia e le istituzioni. È quindi un utile strumento per imparare a ragionare politicamente e a formulare domande indiscrete, a partire da quella primordiale: siamo cittadini di un sistema democratico e palese, o sudditi di un regime totalitario e invisibile?
