About this listen

Sometimes the biggest story of your life happens before you’re even born… and sometimes, you get to discover it. One email is all it takes to turn Mala’s life upside down… an email from a stranger 10,000 miles away. Now, as memories from her childhood swirl up in familiarity, she sees them in a different light, as though they’re puzzle pieces that have a new way to fit together. Everything is the same, yet everything is different… The story she thought she knew is true, but there’s been another truth running beneath it the whole time. At 53 years old, Mala didn’t think she had anything new to learn about her past, but now she sees just how much information she’s been missing. She has a decision to make: Will she meet Sakura, the face behind the email, or will she go on pretending that there are no missing pieces in the story of her life? As she wrestles with her decision, we’re taken back in time to 1972 and the story of Aunty Helen, Uncle Peter, and the secret child they must decide what to do with… a story that has had more of an effect on Mala’s life than she’s ever known. When we make sense of the past, we begin to make sense of ourselves, and Mala’s in for a huge voyage of discovery… and maybe, a whole new chapter of her life.

This story kept me wondering what was going to happen next with the characters while at the same time it was educating and reminding me of the differences there are in various cultures. Also illustrating the decisions that are being made because of cultural norms that affect young people, especially when it concerns marriage and adoption. I am glad I read this novel.

This book caught my attention because it explores how much we can still learn about ourselves, even later in life. I liked how it slowly revealed the layers of one family’s history and how the past can shape things we don’t fully understand until much later. The back-and-forth between time periods worked really well and kept me invested. It made me think about the weight of decisions, the stories we’re told growing up, and how one message can change everything.

This audiobook captivated me with its complex characters and emotional intensity. While I expected romance, the revelation of a hidden child added depth. The conflict between aspirations and reality enhanced the plot's authenticity. I appreciated the characters' development as they faced hard truths. It’s a touching, immersive listen intertwining love, ambition, and unexpected twists.

I got pulled into this one. What started as a classic “opposites attract” romance flipped fast once the twist with the child hit. I found myself going back and forth between rooting for them to figure it out and yelling at the pages when things got messy (in a good way). The emotional tension felt real—like these were people you might know, just trying to do the right thing while dealing with some very complicated history. If you like love stories with big reveals and layered characters, this one delivers.

Labyrinth of Dreams is a touching audiobook about a college student in Sri Lanka who falls for a Lecturer at her school and the internal struggles that occur when they have a relationship.

The story begins with a simple email that alters 53-year-old Mala’s life. What follows is a moving exploration of identity, family secrets, and the quiet but dramatic shifts that can come from uncovering the truth.

This student, Helen, falls for her teacher/lecturer, and they have sex during a school trip. There is much discussion about marriage in her culture, where a woman's parents typically arrange marriages. In this case, the student is 22 while the lecturer is 40. She is in love, and he admires the student, but isn’t in love, and unfortunately, the student gets pregnant. The book covers the dilemmas they both face, their actions, and their interactions with their families.

The narrator does an excellent job of bringing each character to life. The pacing is perfect for an audiobook: never rushed, yet engaging, allowing listeners to understand the unfolding mystery and emotions fully.

One of the standout aspects of Labyrinth of Dreams is its sensitive handling of themes like adoption, family legacy, and the courage it takes to confront the unknown. The story reminds us that no matter our age, we can still grow, discover, and heal.

If you enjoy introspective and richly plotted stories in which the personal becomes profound and the past speaks to the present, then Labyrinth of Dreams is a must-listen.

The book seems to weave together two timelines: Mala's present-day struggle with whether to meet this stranger, and a journey back to 1972 to uncover the story of Aunty Helen, Uncle Peter, and a secret child. That dual narrative keeps you interested, slowly revealing how these past events have shaped Mala's life without her ever knowing.

I was drawn in right away by the dual timeline—Mala’s present-day uncertainty and the unfolding events from 1972. The shifts between timelines felt smooth and intentional, and each chapter left me wanting more. I found myself deeply invested in uncovering the connection between the past and Mala’s current situation. The story around Aunty Helen, Uncle Peter, and the secret child was emotional and full of tension. As the pieces came together, it became clear how the past shaped everything Mala believed about herself and her family. Thoughtful, layered, and incredibly well told.

This audiobook felt so real, like sitting with someone as they uncover the truth about who they are. As Mala's journey unfolded, it reminded me of how some family stories stay hidden for years, even in my own life. It’s a beautiful reminder that it’s never too late to seek answers… or to start a new chapter.

I popped this on during a long road trip and got way more invested than I expected. The story threw me for a loop with that hidden kid plot, did not see it coming! I loved how it blended ambition, love, and real-life complications. It felt raw, relatable, and surprisingly emotional in the best way.
