About this listen

Some Amish communities aren't so cozy.

The death of a teenage Amish girl in a cornfield looks like an accident, but sheriff Serenity Adams suspects foul play. To solve the murder, she must investigate the nearby Amish community with the help of a man who was shunned years ago.

At first glance, the case seems obvious. The poor girl was probably accidently shot during hunting season, but when the elders of the Amish community and even the girl's parents react with uncaring subdued behavior, Serenity becomes suspicious. As she delves deeper into the secretive community that she grew up beside, she discovers a gruesome crime from the past that may very well be related to the Amish girl's shooting.

Serenity's persistence leads her to a stunning discovery that not only threatens to destroy her blossoming romance with Daniel Bachman, but may even take her life in the end.

Murder and the amish?

The narrator did A good job. The book was written well and interesting. I kept trying to guess what was going to happen next in this book, but I was always surprised in the end.

Harlequin romance

This book read more like a harlequin romance novel than a detective novel. somewhat disappointing

Excellent Audio

Very good book and the performance of the narrator was excellent too. Amish community, murder, love, a women sheriff and surprises. Kept my interest throughout the book. The deceit of the old sheriff to the community is terrible. I would recommend this audio to others.

Great story - could have left out bad language and been better

Good blend of Amish and English interaction. Good mystery. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Superb Start to Mystery Series

Karen Ann Hopkins has created memorable characters and an amazingly diverse setting in which her female sheriff must develop a more open mind to deal more effectively with the unique population of her county.

Especially love the Audible version.

Good Story, but...

This was a well-plotted out story, somewhat overdramatic in the depiction of Amish.
the narration almost prevented me from continuing to listen--Amish 'speech' was stilted and overly slow and over-pronounced.
The narration will, most likely, make me consider my options before another purchase.

Amish Mystery Series

Excellent Story. Point of view shifts carried story along well. Revelation of killer anticlimactic. Charater development was very good. Descriptions of Amish country side and culture provided a great foundation for getting into the story.

Small Town Indiana and the Amish

The book had the makings of a great story . . . but a couple of things ruined it for me . . . first off, the negative portrayal of the Amish as a people, with no respect given for their faith or way of life, and secondly, the language and unprofessional attitude of the smart-mouthed sheriff, Serenity Adams . . . who is one minute focused on finding a killer, and the next minute acting like a teenager infatuated with ex-Amish heart throb, Daniel Bachman. So much of the tale just did not jive . . . young Amish girls "fooling around" shamelessly with first one boy then another . . . and Amish parents heartlessly burying their dead children . . . there's a difference between being quiet, private people and being callous and cold . . . none of the beautiful hard working, steadfast qualities of the Amish are depicted here . . . instead something sinister and evil is implied . . . the writing is amateurish and lacks depth . . . I finished the book, but will not be going on to the others in the series . . .
