Les autorités concluent rapidement à un crime crapuleux et les soupçons se tournent tout naturellement vers "La Griotte", un fainéant de bas étage qui jardine parfois pour la victime afin de gagner de quoi se saouler. L'homme qui possède la clef du jardin est autorisé, lorsqu'il le désire, à dormir dans la remise. Qui plus est, "La Griotte" a été aperçu, le soir du crime, pénétrant dans le jardin de Mlle Fabrègue. Tout irait pour le mieux pour le substitut, si "La Griotte" n'avait pas un alibi inaltérable. C'est alors au Commissaire Rosic d'entrer en jeu pour démêler cette histoire de faux semblants.
