About this listen

Injury. Adrenaline. Addiction. These are the things that fuelled one man's race to international stardom as he pushed boundaries and took life on and off the bike to the limits.

Starting out as a talented youth riding the desert tracks of California, his reckless nature and incredible talent earned him a position in the rarefied world of professional motorcycle racing. Despite the success in his professional life, his personal life was crumbling around him - John was battling with depression and temptation, which began to threaten his career, health and marriage, ultimately bringing him to a life of alcoholism, addiction and even smuggling.

In his remarkable memoir, one of the world's most renowned riders takes us on a raw and unique journey to the extremes of fast living.

John 'Hopper' Hopkins is an icon for motorsport fans worldwide. He won't let anything hold him back. He has broken almost every bone in his body (twice), suffered a bleed on the brain and had a finger amputated...yet he continued to race. Finally, at the age of 35 - with his latest crash at Brands Hatch in 2017 putting him in rehab for two years - he decided to hang up his helmet.

Leathered tells the incredible story of an unparalleled career. From bone-crunching injuries and alcohol-fuelled antics to the breakdown of his marriage, it unveils the true stories behind the lurid headlines.

Unreal!

I was both horrified and amazed while listening to Hopper’s story, so much success amidst so many challenges.
Thank you for sharing, and thank you for continuing to share your love of motorcycling with upcoming racers and the world. Take care of those girls, you never know, they may throw a leg over a GP bike one day!
My only feedback is that the narrator probably could have done more research on the pronunciation of names and places that we all know so well in the motorcycling community, but that’s nitpicky 😜

Couldn’t put this book down

This book is great for all motorcycle riders, racers and enthusiasts. I felt like I was right there with John throughout the entire story. I ride and race in SoCal and I’m familiar with a lot of the tracks and people he talks about so that made it even more interesting. I wish I knew John’s story prior to meeting him a couple of months ago at our local track in Perris California.

Racers will relate

I believe that most racers will be able to relate to this book and the struggles within.

I've said for years that racing is an addiction, the big question is what do you do with that after your racing time is over?

This is an excellent read and I've already recommended it to quite a few people.

Great work John Hopkins! Looking forward to seeing how you can help get the United States back into the worldwide motorcycle racing conversation.

Excellent

As a MotoGP fan I had heard bits a pieces of Hopkins story/stories… But wow what journey.. excellent narration, made me feel as though I was listening to John talk and tell stories, not like I was being read to.
Definitely recommend to any GP fan who’s remotely interested, especially American GP fans..

What an epic story from an American legend.

I began this book having some background knowledge of who Hopkins was but little did I know how fantastic of a story his life was and still is! I've done all the road racers from Dunlop(s), Martin, Rutter, McGuinness and the list goes on, but this story is unlike any of the others and is worth the listen!

Raw

An insane life story, pure, and astonishingly raw. I love the natural form of writing/storytelling. Well done Hopper! Thank you for giving back to this amazing sport.

Used to race with The Hopper..

Seriously doubt he’d recall though. He was on another level on 2 wheels. I’ve gridded up with him on Honda RS250Rs, as well as the east coast & first running of the Aprilia Cup Challenge at Road A. I was a novice that year, but just missed qualifying top 10. That was an odd race, as status (novice / pro) wasn’t taken into account.

Hopper, if you read these reviews (and knowing you’re a West Coast dude), I heard my 2001 RS250R #93 / 193 made it out your way! Red / black / silver. Big time sellers remorse & would love to buy it back if you ever come across it!

Hope you’re well.

Steve Reeves (former AMA 93/193)
