About this listen

Set in early 20th century Mississippi, Lenny Gray yearns for life beyond the suffocating walls that enclose her within. She has known from an early age that she is meant to live a better life, but she is hemmed in by the limits imposed on women and, particularly, African American women.

Lenny Gray is set in motion when she attempts to escape from marriage to a loathsome man. Under the cloak of nightfall, Lenny rushes towards nearby train tracks to begin her walk north towards a better future. Before long, she is caught by Curly, the father of her unborn child, who gives her an ultimatum.

Beautiful. That is the only word I can use to describe the story. Lenny Gray was about dreams, hardships, fears, abuse, love, life and death but most importantly hope. I was so caught up that my husband demanded that I remove my headphones so that he can listen also. We finished it in one day. It’s been a week and we can’t stop talking about it. The characters were brought to life. The book drags you in from the first paragraph and holds you hostage (willingly) until the end. Excellent job Mr. Sewell, excellent job.

I love the entire book !

It is incredible how I can imagine all the characters in this story, and even more incredible how one person can represent each character. I loved how I was able to travel back to time and imagine every scene. I listened to book during my commute and I immediately got hooked. It made time fly.

it's just Amazing!

A skillful riveting narration steeped in history starting during slavery and ending in the 1950s. The protagonist Lenny Gray is forced into a loveless and abusive marriage. Even though the subject matter is painful, this story highlights the pervasive effects transgenerational trauma has had on the African American race. In my opinion, this is a subject that does not get addressed. I am grateful that the author created the audible version. He is a skilled storyteller who is able to hold the attention of his audience. I really look forward to more of his work.
