About this listen

Charles Portis, author of True Grit, got John Wayne his only Oscar. He once had Karl Marx’s old gig (as the London bureau chief for the New York Herald-Tribune). He’s written four other novels, three of them masterpieces, though which three is up for debate. Here’s 7,000 words about a guy you’ve never heard of. But should, we say.

The narrator sounds like an AI bot, or someone who doesn’t understand what he’s reading. Pauses are missing or misplaced, words and phrases mispronounced or mangled.

Perhaps an interesting article but hard to say because of narration.

Solid intro to and overview of Portis and his writings. But McCarthy comes in for one or two inaccurate comparisons, and that's it. Change the title....

Good, but naught to do with McCarthy

If Charles Portis was truly "like Cormac McCarthy but funny" this audiobook falls to illustrate that fact in any way.

A mind numbingly boring biography that I would be reluctant to call writing. It's just a recitation of events in Portis' professional life. Fails to bring the man to life in any way.

The narrator is what Casey Casum would have sounded like if her had spent his entire career at NPR.

Nothing here to recommend.

Nothing Like McCarthy, Also Boring

I usually put 5 stars but this strange homage gets all 1s because I believe the believer and writers loving other writers in print get one star because I write in the one lone star state and I really think this piece is gr8, but I don't want to alienate myself from John Kelso at the Austin American Statesman by saying so out loud or in print. raw-atx

So bad its good.

Not funny. Boring, dull, exhausting to listen to. Not worth one credit. Great book to listen to if you want to sleep.
