About this listen

Shot in the head by an unknown assailant, Sharon McCone finds herself trapped by Locked-In Syndrome: almost total paralysis but an alert, conscious mind. Since the late-night attack occurred at her agency's offices, the natural conclusion was that it was connected to one of the firm's cases.

As Sharon lies in her hospital bed, furiously trying to break out of her body's prison and discover her attacker's identity, all the members of her agency fan out to find the reason why she was assaulted. Meanwhile, Sharon becomes a locked-in detective, sorting through the clues her colleagues discover.

As the case draws to a surprising and even shocking conclusion, Sharon's husband, Hy, must decide whether or not to surrender his own viiolent past and exact final vengeance when the person responsible is identified.

Critic reviews

"Throughout her many McCone novels, Muller has displayed a knack both for keeping the series fresh and for allowing her character to grow. She accomplishes both goals this time by taking McCone out of the spotlight but giving her fans a chance to root for her to recover. After all these years, Muller's series remains a gold standard for female detective stories." ( Kirkus Reviews)
"Top-notch mystery and more from one of the genre's Grand Masters." ( Library Journal)

As the headline suggests this story is told from the point of view of Sharon McCone who lies in a hospital bed; her mind functioning as usual. Unfortunately she's also paralyzed; unable to move or speak. Yet between her husband and her operatives she's able to solve the crime that put her in the hospital bed. This one is a good solid four star listen for fans of McCone..

I love this narrator, especially her male voices. Hence I went looking for more of her work on the big members only sale. This author is OK, but I am not going back through the series for more of her work. I enjoy the narrator in the story, and it balanced out the author. I purchased the two books that this narrator did in this series. Clever outline make no mistake. However, so many characters which I usually enjoy, but they don’t seem to be relevant. Just quantity. Hence not going back through the series.

Would you try another book from Marcia Muller and/or Deanna Hurst?

This was my first book by this author. I will not try another book. I was so disappointed. The reviews were so good. Has anyone who reviewed read Baldacci, Patterson, Grisham and Susan Brown's Chill Factor?

Oh my goodness, this book was more like reading a Nancy Drew novel. It just was too tame for me.

What could Marcia Muller have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

I want more suspense, more strategy, more romance, more sex.

Which character – as performed by Deanna Hurst – was your favorite?

The characters had no color, no spice, no zing.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

I was just so disappointed in how dull the book was.

Any additional comments?

It was interesting to learn about the Locked-In syndrome. I could have read about it in Wikipedia and saved myself $14.95.
